Yampa River
MAY 30, 2012
Sierra Club White Water Rafting Trip
Five-Day Yampa River Rafting Trip:
The Yampa River remains one of the last free flowing rivers left in the Colorado River system. This wild river runs exceptional in May and June when it swells with runoff from the high mountain snowpack. The Yampa flows out of the north-central Colorado mountains and into the canyon country of Dinosaur National Monument, through 2,000-foot-high golden cliffs and wooded canyons carved by rain, snow, frost, and wind.
From launch at Deerlodge Park to the confluence with the Green River at Echo Park, the Yampa runs 46 miles through exciting rapids and a colorful canyon maze, cutting deep into the Blue Mountain plateau. It then meets the Green River and the trip continues 31 miles through Whirpool and Split Mountain canyons to the departure point.
Sierra Club leader Pat Tierney will be along to expand on Yampa River history and importance to the ecosytsem of this landscape. With a PhD in Biology, Dr Tierney currently is chairman of the Recreation, Parks and Tourism Department at San Francisco State University and teaches classes in eco-tourism, recreation management and marketing, tourism systems, entrepreneurship and resort management.
Since 2000 Pat has been on the Board of Directors, and served as Chairman, for the Yampa River Awareness Project (YRAP), a grass roots organization dedicated to saving the canyons and the free flowing wild nature of the Yampa River in Colorado.
