Locally known to be part of the Banana Belt of Colorado - Buena Vista is typically a high and dry destination. The town is nestled at the base of the Sawatch Mountain Range and is known to have some of the best mountain views in Colorado.
Despite the altitude of 8,000 feet above sea level, Buena Vista has mild temperatures year round, making it a great outdoor destination. Summer high temperatures in Buena Vista can reach 80 degrees Fahrenheit, but temperature variations between night and day can swing as much as 33 degrees Fahrenheit – so be prepared. Weather in the summer is generally dry with some late afternoon thunderstorms mid-season. This mild climate, along with the mountainous environment make Buena Vista, Colorado one of the most popular summer destinations for outdoor recreation. Summer visitors to Buena Vista, Colorado enjoy whitewater rafting, mountain biking, horseback riding, ATV touring, ziplining, and more.
In the winter months Buena Vista weather is colder with average high temperatures around 30 degrees Fahrenheit, but it is still relatively dry. The town generally gets a dusting of snow each storm, leaving the bulk of the white stuff high in the mountains. On average the storms hover over the mountains and drop most of the snow at 10,000 feet and above. Once the short storm cycle passes and the sun beats down, most visitors and locals enjoy the great amount of snowmobiling found just a short drive up the mountains from Buena Vista, Colorado. At the base of several mountain passes that close each winter, Buena Vista snowmobiling trails are vast and numerous. Downhill skiing and snowboarding at Monarch Mountain and Ski Cooper are also popular winter activities in Buena Vista, Colorado.
