Train to be a raft guide in Dinosaur National Monument
CLOSED FOR 2012
New raft guides with Adrift Adventures will train on the Arkansas River through River Runners, but must be committed to working for Adrift, which means living in Jensen, Utah. The cost for accepted guide school applicants is $500, which includes two weeks of formal training. Trainees are provided wetsuits, splash tops, booties, and personal flotation devices during this time. Upon completion of formal training, participants must provide their own personal gear and will be expected to participate in another two weeks of informal training. A minimum of 100 hours and 200 miles must be logged before a qualification run can be attempted. Trainees must successfully qualify on the Arkansas River in Colorado to become an employee of Adrift Adventures. Training is physically demanding and requires long and sometimes cold days on the river. First-year guides can expect to make between $1,500 and $2,500 for the season not including tips.
All commercial raft guides are required to have a current First Aid and CPR certification by an accredited institution (online courses are not accepted). Guides for Adrift Adventures must also complete the Utah White water River Guide endorsement upon hire. Required personal equipment includes a type III pfd, throw bag, flip line, helmet, whistle, and river knife.
